OUT OF THE STORM - Front Cover

  1. OUT OF THE STORM: Front Cover - An acrylic painting on a 14 x 22 size melamine board. It appears on the front cover of the softcover book, "OUT OF THE STORM," by William Hope Hodgson, published by Centaur Books in 1980.

The book was first published in hardcover by Donald Grant in 1975. The stories were collected and edited by Sam Moskowitz. But while Grant used my illustrations for the stories inside the book, he used a Hannes Bok painting for the dust jacket of the book.

It annoys me when I see a book that features one artist on the dust jacket and another illustrating the inside. In the late 1940s through the early 1950s, Fantasy Press was my favorite publisher, the books were of ideal size, nicely bound in cloth with gold lettering, and the text was printed on good paper using an easy-reading font. Among the artists he used to illustrate the books were two of my favorites, Edd Cartier and Hannes Bok. I love those books, but the publisher, Lloyd Eshbach, screwed up when he had Cartier illustrate the inside of the book, "Darker Than You Think," but had A.J. Donnell do the Dust Jacket art. I was also annoyed when he had Hannes Bok illustrate the inside of, "Seven Out of Time," but again, had A.J. Donnell do the DJ art.

So, though I admire the artwork of Hannes Bok, his painting does not belong on the dust jacket of this book, "Out of the Storm". He had done the painting decades before, and it does not illustrate any of the stories contained in the book. But I should not complain, because Grant was one of the small press publishers who gave me the chance to grow as a book illustrator.

Anyway, I'm glad that Centaur Books, seeing that I had illustrated the stories, did not use Bok's painting, but asked me to do the cover for their softcover reprint edition.
